We had Michiko Kuroda Sensei from Japan Shiatsu College and had a workshop on “Advanced Shiatsu on Abdominal Area.”
At first, she explained what kind of benefit we can get from Namikoshi basic abdominal Shiatsu. Then, we checked which muscles we can approach by using abdominal Shiatsu from Western medicine perspectoive. She also taught us how to see specific reactions by doing abdominal examination from Eastern medicine perspective.
She demonstrated a flow of treatment and we practiced each other.
It was a very good opportunity to learn abdominal Shiatsu and rethink about the use of this method.

June 2015

June 28th, 2015, Continuing Professional Education Program, Jikiden-kai was held at Yaletown Clinic.
Topic: Shiatsu exchange
Participants: Akiko, Makiko and Misuzu
We had a Shiatsu exchange session this time.
By exchanging Shiatsu, we can learn so much from other practitioners.
There were only 3 people this time, but these 3 don’t work together at all because of the shift difference, it was a good opportunity to share the skills.
After the session, we were all relaxed...

April 2015

April 21st, 2015, Continuing Professional Education Program, Jikiden-kai was held at Yaletown Clinic.
Guest: Yusuke Fujimoto san
Topic: Stiff neck treatment
Participants: Kiyoshi, Mirei, Tom, Kali, Takahiro, Nakako, Aimi, Ken, Teruyo, Maya, Miki and Misuzu
We had Yusuke Fujimoto san who worked at Japan Shiatsu clinic for 8 years until end of March.
He shared the stiff neck treatment technique in spine position.
He showed us the target muscles and then how to treat patients with stiff neck in spine position.
After his demonstration, we all practiced each other.
It looked easy when he showed us but it was difficult to handle the head and neck, and apply pressure appropriately on the target muscles. It requires practice and experience.
It was a very good opportunity to learn his technique before he leaves.

Everyone was so serious..

He demonstrated on Kiyoshi.

We practiced each other.

March 2015

March 22nd, 2015, Continuing Professional Education Program, Jikiden-kai was held at Yaletown Clinic.
Guest: Kana Sensei
Participants: Kiyoshi, Ken, Masashi, Yusuke. F and Misuzu
We had Kana Sensei who is in 29th week pregnancy, and a teacher at Canadian College of Shiatsu Therapy. The topic was "Treatment for pregnant women".
At first, we talked about what kind of physical change would happen during pregnancy, how to communicate with a client, how to make a pregnant client comfortable on the table.
Then we actually worked on Kana Sensei.
These are some points we learnt.
  • At first, ask the client how far she is.
  • Make a client comfortable using cushions, pillows.
(generally left side down is easier for pregnant women)
  • It is comfortable for them if a cushion is under the belly when ohga.
  • Wrap the legs with a blanket, they are easy to become cold
  • If the belly is getting bigger, it would be hard for them to lie down with gyoga position.
4 ohga:4 ohga: 2 gyoga would be good.
  • Hold pressure firmly. Painful pressure is not good for them
  • Communication is very important

It was a very good opportunity to learn treatment for pregnant women from the pregnant client side and the therapist side.

Checking tight area on Kana Sensei.
Lumber and sacum area are good
areas to work on.

Apply firm gentle pressure on
lumber area. The pressure was
almost vertical to the table.

Put a pillow between the
legs, under the belly. It is
important to communicate well.

We became all pregnant
after Jikiden kai!

All participants together!

February 2015

February 1st, 2015, Continuing Professional Education Program, Jikiden-kai was held at Canadian College of Shiatsu Therapy Main Campus.
Special guest: Hideo Asada Sensei
Participants: Kiyoshi, Mirei, Aimi, Maria, Kaz, Sue, Mariko, Masayo, Yusuke.S, Ken, Takahiro, Masashi, Hiroaki, Atsushi, Teruyo, Yusuke. F, Makiko, Tom, Takeo, Momoko and Misuzu
We had Hideo Asada Sensei from Namikoshi Shiatsu Association in Mexico and had a lecture about ‘Improvement of motion by approaching on muscle tissue’.
At first he talked about the cause of pain, how it spreads, and conditions of muscles.
Then he gave us explanations about how these muscle conditions occur, and what factors could cause the limitation of motion.
We took a look at the popular conditions that clients often complain, figure out which factor could be applied, and thought about what kind of treatment could be effective.
He also mentioned that treating only the area that the client feels pain is not effective. Treating from center of the body to distal part which is the movement of basic Shiatsu is important and effective.
It was a great opportunity to learn different aspects of treatment.
(Misuzu)

Beginning of the lecture.

This time was the forth time for us
to have Asada Sensei.

Everyone is listening carefully
and taking notes...

Feeling 'muscle spasm' on Asada Sensei.

He is talking about how important
the basic Shiatsu point is.

We are looking forward to seeing
you again, Asada Sensei!!
